His Story:

The past weeks have been a whirlwind of emotions both up and down. On May 14, Chad showed me a large bruise on his upper arm. He could not remember how it occured. This was odd because he does not bruise easily at all. Over the next few days, we noticed more bruising on his chest and stomach. There was no explanation, so on May 18, we went to see his general practictioner. He could find not obvious reasons for the brusing, so he took some blood and said he would call us if needed. Within 20 minutes of leaving the office, the Dr., not his nurse, called from his personal cell phone. He said that Chad had a platelet count of 60,000. The normal is 150-500K. He wanted us to see a Hematologist immediately. We went in the next day at 1:00. He had no answers. He took blood to run a series of tests and made an appointment for a liver/spleen scan for Tuesday May 24. Chad went and completed it as directed, and so again we had no answers and were just waiting. In the mean time, our family pet (Rue) barely scraped Chad on the side. The blood pooled under his skin, and it looked like he had been hit by a semi. On Thursday, May 26, we returned to the hematologist. He stated that the platelets had dropped to a critical level of 24. He had no answers as to why the count was dropping. The next step was to complete a bone marrow biopsy. This is not to be wished on anyone. This was completed in the office, and then we were instructed to report to the hospital for admission. They wanted to continue testing while we waited for results of marrow biopsy. We went into the hospital that night and several tests were conducted the following morning. About 2:O0 May 27, were were told we could go home. They started him on steroids, and we were given the impression we were on the mend. Chad was so excited, and we made our way home. We got his medications and proceeded to get comfortable at home. Later that evening, about 7:00, we received a devistating phone call. The hematologist called personally to say that the preliminary marrow results had come in, and Chad had LUKEMIA. We were to report immeidately to Baptist hospital in Memphis. We were in our room by midnight and orders were sent to have a pic line (IV to the heart) inserted as soon as the techs arrived that morning. About 2:00 pm on May 28, Chad began chemotheraphy for Acute Myeloid Lukemia. This is a 7+3 foundation treatment.  He will have 7 continuous days of chemo. We were told we would be her for a minimum of 3 weeks. We are still waiting for further results on the marrow as to how further treatment will be issued. They will take his white blood (immunity) to zero. It will then start to reboot. This will be a long process. We will have good days and bad day. We have a good family and friend support center. They will help us care for our daughter, so I may stay with him at the hospital during his therapy. I am lucky that my job will afford me time off during the summer (principal). However, Chad works for a small electrical company. His company does not offer any benefits. We provide his health insurance by way of a personal policy. We unfortunely are not a family that can afford to be without his income. He will be out of work for an undetermined amount of time. We will need assistance with household bills and living expenses not to mention the medical expenses that this will bring. I want Chad to keep his spirits high and reserve his strength to fight this battle. I do not want him to worry about home expenses or feel guilty that he cannot provide. We are appreciative for any support you are willing to offer. Prayers are also accepted free of charge.
